Client Suitability Assessment
Understand your business and the clients you’re best built to serve, so you know exactly who to look for. Start with yourself, define a few candidate client profiles, score them, and leave with a clear picture of your ideal client.
Score groups, not single companies. “Businesses” is too broad. “Commercial general contractors running 5+ projects a year in Central Ohio” is something you can act on.
About 45 minutes. Your answers are saved in this browser, so you can come back anytime.
Compare, don’t confirm
Score two or three candidate client profiles side by side. Having options to compare stops you from scoring a favorite too generously.
Score 1 to 5 against the descriptions
Each question describes what a 1, 3 and 5 look like. Higher always means a better fit. Use 2 and 4 for in-between answers.
Say how you know
Mark each score Verified (data or conversations), Informed (credible signals) or Assumed (a hunch). Confidence matters as much as the score.
A living assessment
Your ideal client isn’t decided once. Every conversation, win, loss, referral and project teaches you something about who you serve best. Run that feedback back through this workbook so your picture keeps getting sharper.
Revisit it every quarter, and any time something surprises you. Keep assessing and reassessing, and let what you learn guide where you spend your time.
Know yourself first
Your ideal client depends on what you do best. Before looking outward, get clear on your strengths, your best and worst clients, and your limits. The answers become the standard every candidate profile is measured against.
Define your candidate client profiles
Using what you learned in step 01, describe two or three client groups that might be your best fit. Be specific. Leave a column blank if you’re only comparing two.
Check for deal-breakers
A high score can hide a fatal flaw. Any “No” here means the profile isn’t a fit right now, whatever it scores. “Unsure” means you need to confirm it.
Score each profile
Twelve questions in two parts. Spot asks whether a client is worth finding and whether you can find them. Assess asks whether they fit you and whether you understand what matters to them. Questions marked ×3 count three times as much as those marked ×1.
See who fits best
Each profile gets a weighted fit score from 0 to 100, separate Spot and Assess scores, a deal-breaker check and a read on how much of the score rests on evidence.
